Gifted Children Records is very pleased to bring you a new four song, self-titled EP from Women & Children. Born in Paris in 2001, Women & Children are a musical collective that revolves around the song writing of Cheryl Serwa and Kevin Lasting. Members have included Olivier Robert, Jamie Moon, Mike Fellows and John Webster Johns.
...Women & Children met around "the Ha-Ha” Scene in Paris. I found Cheryl inside at the BEE-STING chanting "Hey you pigs! Don't bleed on the slaughterhouse floor” over the DJ booth. Kevin was visibly interested. "Take out the trash,” he called back. Is this music Love's Body? It seemed as though greater Paris was calling out backwards to the Night of the Rake, or even the North-South Pagans... Where was their musical gravity? All the usuals I guess but there was something very different, they werent aping the 60's like these kids excuse me cats we see so much of now.
Women & Children make music for the coming Ghost Dance or the silly putty in my hands, for the Zara
Whale or the paralyzed, for "slow-dance, and Bad-Habits.” W&C extend this warm welcome, welcome to the Butcher, welcome to the prospector, and the Wolfmans Tick-Tock. To the coming ice age. To the "Great Dying.”
Kevin and Cheryl fled Paris amidst some threats and numerous debts, & now theyre here acting like summertime in the Ghetto. Once upon a time they thought they could get by on the goodness of their hearts, when that didnt work they tried their looks and when that failed they started singing, "Like a drowning man at the gates of tomorrows debts.” Killing time until America storms Babylon? Cheryl attempts to shape-shift into a small rat in front of me, Kevin appears to be watching the film "Why Me? twice in a row. I try to find out more about their music, why is your music so catchy and grim? Like something the reaper might put on in a jovial mood... they seem non committal,” "Hail Hail Rock n Roll” Cheryl giggles... How did things start for you? "When Cat Power heard our two singles "Im your jigaboo” and "How to Squirm out of a Vice” she invited us to tour Europe and Australia, from there we decided to play for keeps.”
"The Songs on this EP are some of our favorites, do you know what I mean??” WE got to cool our brains...anyway were terrified.” I don't, but I can't stop listening to their music, it's like holding a beating heart, or sometimes it's like it's your birthday and you wish nobody knew because you feel so old...
- Morgan Tanner, excerpt from the article "Hats Who Dance on Your Head” from HOT DAWG MAGAZINE 2007.
Women & Children have previously toured with Cat Power, Brightblack Morning Light, Sean Lennon, and The Kills, amongst others. Fusing elements of goth, dark folk, rock, and sound experimentation, these four songs showcase Women & Children at their very finest. They are currently breast feeding and writing new songs.
